Cosmology and Extensions of General Relativity

Resumo

The standard cosmological model is based on Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and has been fairly successful in accommodating the main observations at our disposal. In spite of this, both the need to trace the physical limits of General Relativity, and the quest for a theory unifying all the known fundamental interactions have led to the proposal of generalized gravity theories. We survey the major extensions of Einstein’s theory which have been put forward, namely those involving long-range scalar interactions, and discuss how they stand the scrutiny of post-newtonian and cosmological tests.
