On 08/09/2013, around 20:00, I noticed that the Moon was very beautiful, and with a star very close to it, so I decided to take a picture. But when I took it, besides the stars and the moon there were other "things" in the sky that looked like planets. After some time, I took other pictures again, but nothing else appeared. I went to research the subject and saw news about a phenomenon that would happen on the same day, but when comparing the photos, I didn't see anything similar. I would really like to know what these "things" could be, because I ended up getting very curious. Could they even be planets? Photo is attached.

I made a mirror image of the one you sent, inverted the colours and added legends:

In the photo you sent us, we are sure that the Moon and Venus are present (Venus is the bright "star" near the Moon). The other bright star to the right is like Spica, the brightest star of the Virgo constellation. Below is a map of the sky at that time:

Everything else in your image may result from:

  1. Internal reflections that produce ghost images, like those below Venus;
  2. Machine noise or atmospheric turbulence;
  3. Some of the brightest stars (careful: some dots may be stars or noise...)
The phenomenon you heard about was the occultation of Venus by the Moon. The Moon covered Venus for a while, but only for observers in the South Hemisphere, below the 30º latitude parallel. Here, in Madeira, we could see Venus the whole time!
