Short Bio

Jos van Leeuwen is Associate Professor in Computational Design at the Department of Mathematics and Engineering of the University of Madeira, Portugal, where he teaches subjects in the areas of computational design, interaction design, collaborative design, hypermedia design, and computer-aided design, in several undergraduate and graduate engineering programs. He is author and director of the undergraduate Interactive Media Design program. Teaching in the Master of Human-Computer Interaction, he is also adjunct faculty of the HCI institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Since 2007, he is assistant director of the Laboratory for Usage-Centered Software Engineering (www.labuse.org). His general research interest is in using design to enhance communication and vice versa. In particular his interest is in social networking, location-awareness, and design methods. He holds an MSc and PhD from Eindhoven University of Technology. Before joining the University of Madeira in 2006 he worked 14 years at Eindhoven University of Technology, a few years in software industry, and a post-doctoral/sabbatical year at the Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon.
